What You Need to Know About Open Enrollment and Medicare

November 19, 2017

What is Open Enrollment?

Open Enrollment is a set period each year designated for health insurance applications. For 2018, Medicare Open Enrollment began November 1, 2017 and ends December 7, 2017. After this date, you can enroll or change plans only if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.

Which circumstances qualify for a Special Enrollment Period?

If you move, age off of a parent’s plan, get divorced or married, become a widow or widower, lose your job or have a new baby then you will be eligible for a special enrollment period.

Which insurance options use Open Enrollment Periods?

If you qualify for Medicare, Job-based health insurance or Affordable Care Act health insurance exchanges then Open Enrollment Periods often apply.

Do you or someone you know qualify for Medicare?
