New Approaches for Impotency

April 28, 2015

About 30 million American men experience erectile dysfunction (ED), and medical research now shows that 80 percent of erectile dysfunction cases have a physical cause.  It’s a new era for men with ED because it is no longer a subject of taboo and. more importantly. because there are so many options for treating it.  In fact, most cases of ED can now be overcome through medical treatment.

ED is defined as the inability to sustain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse.  While most men at one time or another in their sexual life may experience the inability to have or sustain an erection during times of significant stress or fatigue, this is normal, typically temporary, and does not indicate a problem.  However, millions of men of all ages experience this inability as a continuing problem that significantly impacts their quality of life.

Physical Causes

For the vast majority of men, ED is attributable to a physical or organic cause.  The major risk factors for ED include:

Neurologic conditions, such as spinal cord injury, strokes, Parkinson’s disease, and multiple sclerosis,

Vascular disease, such as from diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension, renal failure or smoking

Surgery or trauma, such as prostate gland removal, pelvic surgeries or fractures

Prescription and recreational drugs, such as high blood pressure medication, antidepressants, chemotherapy, alcohol, and marijuana

Some men may experience acute episodes of impotency which are attributed to psychological, not physical, causes (such as stress).  This is known as psychogenic ED and is usually temporary and will resolve normally.  For men who have had significant medical problems such as those listed above, erectile dysfunction may be a persistent condition.
