da Vinci® Robotic Surgery

da Vinci® Robotic Surgery

Technology is providing Riverside Medical Clinic’s board-certified surgeons with the ability to perform complex surgical procedures in the most minimally invasive way possible. The da Vinci® system was designed to enhance surgical capabilities with a new level of precision and accuracy. A robotic device scales down the surgeon’s large hand movements into smaller movements of tiny instruments, providing stability, dexterity and control. The instruments bend and rotate almost 360 degrees – executing easier than the human hand does. The surgeon using magnified, 3D HD vision to control the robotic arm. With its assistance, we can now operate using only 1 – 2 cm incisions versus the long incisions of the past.  Smaller incisions mean less tissue and muscle damage, which means less pain and less scarring too. Of course, less pain means less need for painkillers. We know now that minimizes the risk of opioid dependence and the possibility of addiction.

The da Vinci® device also helps decreases blood loss significantly. Using the da Vinci® method, blood loss is approximately one-tenth of what it is during traditional surgery. It can dramatically cut the need for blood transfusions.

This minimally invasive approach is used to aid a number of different surgeries, but especially urologic surgery.

For example, having surgery to remove part or all of your prostate is called a prostatectomy. The da Vinci® system enables surgeons to operate with increased precision using instruments smaller than a human fingernail in an area surrounded by tiny nerves and blood vessels. This robotic surgery is known for faster recovery, as well as a faster return of sexual function and urinary continence with less complications.
